Garden Design and Build Brief

Philip Wildman has cherished his Dorking, Surrey home for over twenty years, and it has flourished into a lush, green sanctuary.

However, Philip aspired to enhance the space further, aiming to upgrade the brickwork and incorporate features such as a larger pond and additional water elements to attract wildlife.

The brief included transforming the garden’s outdated 1980s brickwork, which had become overrun and diminished its overall appeal.

Garden Design

Kate Hillock, Gardenscapes’ in-house garden designer, crafted a comprehensive design plan that seamlessly integrated all of Philip’s ideas and aspirations.

The key elements of the design included contemporary terraces and steps, captivating water features, a living wall and green roof, and improved steps to create a more inviting atmosphere.

Gardenscapes’ thoughtful incorporation of hardscaping and softscaping with meticulous attention to detail transformed Philip’s garden into a vibrant, wildlife attracting and welcoming retreat he can fully enjoy.

Terraces and Steps

One of the most striking improvements was the creation of grand steps leading from the back of the house down to the lawn, an impressive feature adding functionality and elegance to the garden.

A glass balustrade ensures the landscape is uninterrupted as you walk down the steps towards the lawn.

The addition of three distinct yet cohesive terrace levels provides versatile patios with ample space for outdoor dining, entertaining and relaxation.

Incorporating planters into the design introduces lush greenery that softens the paving and ensures a serene, inviting atmosphere.

The use of London Stone Porcelain Paving in a neutral tone blends seamlessly with the rear of the property, creating a harmonious transition from the house to the garden.

The terrace and step design and choice of material enhance the garden’s aesthetic appeal and provide durability and ease of maintenance.

To contrast with the stone paving, a Millboard composite decking area was installed, complete with a stylish hanging chair, creating a cosy, relaxed nook.

Water Features

The garden design features a captivating pond aimed at attracting wildlife while enhancing the garden’s aesthetic appeal.

A sleek, modern waterfall was seamlessly integrated into the terraces, adding a dynamic and soothing element to the landscape.

This combination of water features elevates the garden’s visual allure and creates a tranquil atmosphere, making the space inviting and ecologically beneficial.

Lush Planting

Lush planting was a priority for the homeowner, leading to the incorporation of a living wall for vertical planting and a sedum green roof by Mobilane.

A living wall provides a vibrant tapestry of greenery, maximising the use of vertical space and creating a stunning focal point.

With its hardy, drought-resistant plants, the sedum green roof offers excellent insulation properties, reduces rainwater runoff, and promotes urban biodiversity.

To further enhance the garden’s ecological value and visual appeal, wildflower turf was introduced creating a naturalistic lawn offering a beautiful, low-maintenance alternative to traditional grass.

Additional planting was incorporated into the overall garden design, sourced from Northhill Nurseries.

These thoughtful integrations ensure the garden is a feast for the eyes and a haven for wildlife, reflecting the homeowner’s commitment to a lush, sustainable, and vibrant outdoor space.
